Pest Education: Crickets in Ontario

Monday, December 26, 2022 by Greeny’s Pest Control Inc.

Crickets are a common household pest in Ontario, and while they may be small, they can be a big nuisance. These insects are attracted to warmth and moisture, so they often find their way into homes through small cracks and crevices. Once inside, they can quickly multiply and become a problem.

There are several different types of crickets that can be found in Ontario, including the house cricket, the field cricket, and the camel cricket. House crickets are the most common and are typically light yellow or brown in colour. They are about an inch long and have long antennae. Field crickets are slightly larger, with a dark brown or black coloration, and are often found in grassy areas. Camel crickets, also known as cave crickets, are a pale, almost translucent colour and are often found in damp, dark places such as basements.

Crickets can cause damage to clothing, upholstery, and other household items by eating holes in them. They can also be annoying due to the chirping sound that male crickets make, which can be particularly loud at night. In addition to being a nuisance, crickets can also pose a health risk as they can carry diseases and parasites.

To prevent crickets from entering your home, make sure to seal any cracks or openings around doors and windows. Keep your home clean and free of clutter, as crickets are attracted to dark, damp areas. Removing sources of moisture, such as fixing leaky pipes and using dehumidifiers, can also help prevent crickets from breeding.

If you do find crickets in your home, there are several methods you can use to get rid of them. One option is to use chemical insecticides, but these can be a bit hit or miss and is often best left to the professionals. Alternatively, you can try using natural methods such as setting out traps or using essential oils to repel crickets.

One effective natural method is to use a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it around the areas where you have seen crickets. The vinegar scent is unpleasant to crickets and will help to keep them away. You can also try using essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or citrus oils as a natural repellent. Simply mix a few drops of the essential oil with water in a spray bottle and spray it around the areas where you have seen crickets.

Crickets can be a nuisance, but with some simple prevention measures and the use of natural repellents, you can keep these pests out of your home. Remember to regularly check for and seal any potential entry points, keep your home clean and dry, and use natural methods to repel crickets if you do find them in your home. With a little effort, you can successfully keep these pests at bay. If you would like to have a professional company come in and take care of these issues for you, don’t hesitate to contact us.
